3D - Beyond the Core Size
In this webinar, expert Alvanon consultants Christina Onusko and Don Howard illustrated how brands can create the size set avatars that match their body growth standards using the state-of-the-art technologies of today. They discussed solutions for brands looking to create avatars to review grading, proportion and artwork placement on 3D size sets, and how to share your virtual body standards with your supply chain.

FAQ - Size Set Virtual Bodies
Q: What are size set virtual bodies/avatars?
A: Size set avatars are a virtual representation of a size range of bodies that include the base (core) size and other sizes in the size range. The size set can include every size or critical sizes to check grading like the core size and the smallest and largest sizes and usually a few in the middle. Virtual body and avatar means the same thing, simply a 3D digital version of a physical body.
Q: What benefits have brands seen when they use size set avatars/virtual bodies?
A: Brands are having great success using size set virtual bodies to look at grading, proportion, style lines, pocket placement, and artwork scale across an entire size range.
Q: Why isn’t the core size enough to get good fit?
A: Getting the core size right is very important. Understanding how the body evolves in size and shape across a size group category is equally as important, to ensure good fit at each size beyond the core size. A cohesive body size set, in physical or virtual form, is a valuable tool in developing the garment grade, and validating the incremental garment grade distribution on the pattern, to help ensure repeatable fit consistency and design proportion across styles at each size.
Q: How does a brand create a Size Set of Avatars?
A: If the brand has a STANDARD ALVANON core size form, the process looks like this:
Standard Core Size Physical Form>>>> Download STANDARD Size Set Virtual AlvaForms from Alvanon Body Platform (ABP)
A: If the brand has a custom ALVANON form, the process looks like this:
Standard Core Size Physical AlvaForm>>>>Download Core Size Virtual AlvaForm from ABP >>>>Brand Basic Body Size Chart>>>>Develop Detailed Body Growth Chart>>>>Develop Size Set Virtual AlvaForms>>>> Download Size Set Virtual AlvaForms from ABP
A: If the brand has a NON-ALVANON form or no form at all, the process looks like this:
Develop Core Size AlvaForm >>>>Download Core Size Virtual Alvaform from ABP >>>>Brand Basic Body Size Chart>>>>Develop Detailed Body Growth Chart>>>>Develop Size Set Virtual AlvaForms>>>> Download Size Set Virtual AlvaForms from ABP
Q: How does Alvanon arrive at a detailed body growth chart?
A: The starting point is the physical AlvaForm as the core size and the brand’s basic body size chart. Alvanon then uses scan data and other body data that matches the brand’s customer demographic in age and region of the world to determine the actual size, shape, stature and growth of that population. The growth in the detailed body growth chart is according to the latest data, rather than an algorithm or pre-conceived notions of how people get bigger and smaller in a size range.
Q: What’s the difference between using a body scan of a person and an Virtual Alvaform for grade validation?
A: Alvanon VB’s are built specifically to be a product development tool. The physical or Virtual AlvaForm is developed using scan data. Unlike a human scan, the AlvaForm is created as a symmetrical and balanced body with specific features designed to support consistent fit evaluation ( i.e. appropriate room in the under arm and crotch for fitting garments, proper stance for looking at bottoms, change in posture throughout a size range, etc.).
Q: What is the difference between body growth and garment grade?
A: Body growth is the numeric increment between each BODY as it gets larger or smaller. Garment grade is the increment applied to a GARMENT PATTERN as it gets larger or smaller. People often think they are the same, but how the body grows cannot always be exactly translated into garment grading. They relate to one another but are not exactly the same.
Q: What Standard Form are available through the Alvanon Body Platform? Are there any others coming soon?
A: ASTM Missy Curvy Series, ASTM Missy Straight Series, ASTM Men, ASTM Children, North American Kids, EU Men, EU Women, China Men, China Women, Asia Kids.
Coming soon: New China Men, Women, Kids. Shape Great Britain, Hohenstein, IFTH will be available on the platform.
Q: If we need help with a creating a body growth chart, how long does that take? Then how long to create the Virtual Alvaforms?
A: Body Growth and Size Set Virtual AlvaForm projects typically take around 4-6 weeks to complete. This development time will vary due to the number of pending projects there are on queue.
Q: How detailed can the Virtual Alvaforms be?
A: The Virtual AlvaForms come standard with head, hands and feet. In an upcoming update, seam lines will be added onto the texture of the virtual Alvaform. If required and for an extra fee, we can perform further customizations to the body to add muscle/bone features on the body, as well as detailed hands, head and feet.
Virtual Alvaforms/Avatars in the Future
Q: Is Alvanon working on movement/animation for Virtual Alvaforms?
A: Yes. We are working on this and we will be releasing fixed posed Virtual AlvaForms towards the end of this year. In 2020, we are planning to launch movable avatars.
Q: Do you have a solution to generate 3D digital mannequins based on an individual customer’s measurements?
A: No, not at this time.
Q: Is there anything that addresses compression garments, or the overhang or weight of body fat or breast mass past the D cup within 3D?
A: Not that we have seen in the industry, but the technology is evolving rapidly and this is something for which brands are asking.
